380 - Archetypes, Caregiving, and Cultural Dynamics with Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez
Listeners, this week we have a conversation with Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez
In today's episode, we reconnect with Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez to discuss her latest book, "Tías and Primas." Prisca joins Pam to discuss caregiving, the cultural expectations of eldest daughters, and the nuances of interracial relationships. They explore the themes and archetypes in Prisca's writing, shedding light on societal and personal dynamics. Join us for a rich dialogue that navigates cultural identity, creative challenges, and the pursuit of authenticity.
Born into a large, close-knit family in Nicaragua, Mojica Rodríguez grew up surrounded and raised by a loving community of women—her abuelas, tías, and primas—who were, and still are, the beating heart and backbone of her extended family.
The follow-up to her much-acclaimed debut, For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts, TÍAS AND PRIMAS paints the female archetypes that have shaped Mojica Rodríguez—both blood relatives and chosen family—in all their beauty and contradictions: The tía loca who is shunned for defying gender roles. The pretty prima put on a pedestal for her European features. The matriarch who is the core of her community but hides all her pain. In doing so, TÍAS AND PRIMAS aims to expand the vernacular of what it means to be Latina and to heal the pain that is so often embodied in female family lines.
Mojica Rodríguez has been featured on ABC News Live and in outlets like New York Magazine’s The Cut, Teen Vogue, and Cosmopolitan.
